What is Telepresence?

Architected Telepresence

       Experience (Polycom ATX)

Literally translated as "long distance presence,"  “telepresence” refers to a significant leap in
communication technology, which transforms a standard video conference session into an experience, which feels like a live meeting.

Elements that ostensibly differentiate a telepresence solution from a standard video conferencing system are multiple screens, which are large enough to render participants in life-size proportions, high quality, directional audio systems, which give the impression of actual “talking heads”. The whole virtual meeting environment is “wrapped” in high definition communications technologies which eradicate the picture blocking and lip-synchronisation problems which compromised some standard definition video conferencing systems.

Other meeting tools such as file and data sharing are standard. Furniture, room acoustics and lighting are developed to intensify the impression that participants are actually in the same room. This “immersive” experience is a frequent reference when telepresence technology is
discussed.

Such increased performance comes at a cost and it is therefore critical that any telepresence system is available 24/7 to ensure the quickest possible return on investment. As such, it is critical that reliable technology with suitable support contracts is implemented. Usually, telepresence suites are dedicated to immersive meeting and are not multipurpose.

In short

· Telepresence is an “Immersive experience based around bespoke hardware and high definition technology”.
· Telepresence “creates the illusion of actually being there”.
· Telepresence is “Video Conferencing with defined and enforced meeting rules”.
· Telepresence “must work… at all times!”.

Benefits:

Communication is totally natural with every nuance and expression seen in life-size, high definition quality and every sound being crystal clear. Powerful meeting tools are accessible with intuitive, easy-to-use touch-screen controls delivering:

· Higher user adoption.
· Improved, accelerated communication.
· Enhanced, better informed real-time decision making
· Vastly improved costs savings over standard video conferencing  systems.
· Significantly reduced carbon footprint.
